Is Your Sunscreen Safe?

Is Your Sunscreen Safe?

☀️ I get several inquiries a day on what to look for (and what to steer clear of) when it comes to sunscreen, so I am going to do a little breakdown for y’all using Coola Classic Body Organic Sunscreen Spray in SPF 30! ☀️

First of all, the name alone makes me wanna buy this! It sounds too good to be true…organic, classic, sounds cooooling, and on top of all that the packaging it SO CUTE! Almost irresistable…😎

Let me tell you a few things to consider before purchasing this specific item:

👉🏼 All sunscreens require an active ingredient. In this case, Coola opted to use the following:
Avobenzone 3.0%, Octocrylene 6.0%, Octisalate 5.0%, Homosalate 10.0%

👉🏼 I’m going to break down each of these active ingredients for you and explain what they do and the scientific evidence linked to each one:

⚠️ Avobenzone: This is a chemical ingredient and it is one of only TWO effective UVA blockers. UVA rays can cause premature aging as well as skin cancer, so it’s very important to wear a UVA blocker daily. The problem is that this chemical, once exposed to the sun, breaks down in 30 minutes ( Because of this, you will often see Octocrylene listed along side of Avobenzone as a stablizer). As this chemical breaks down, it releases harmful radicals into the body which can actually speed up the aging process and increase the risk of illness including cancer. Additionally, there was a study done that found when exposed to chlorine, Avobenzone can turn toxic, increasing the risk of kidney, liver, and nervous system disorders.

⚠️ Octocrylene: The purpose of Octocrylene is to protect UV blockers and it can enhance their performance. This chemical is absorbed into the skin very easily and it penetrates deeply into the layers. Because of this, it has reactions with many other chemicals that may be in the body. Like Octinoxate, it acts as a photosensitizer, and actually increases the production of free oxygen radicals when your skin is exposed to the sun. Free radicals damage skin, increasing the risk of premature aging and skin cancer. A study that was done in 2006 found that when left on the skin for over 60 minutes, Octocrylene raised the level of free radicals entering the skin to levels higher than that produced by the skin alone when exposed to UV radiation. In other words, it causes more damage than if you had been wearing no sunscreen at all.

⚠️ Homosalate: This is yet ANOTHER chemical that enhances absorbtion of short UVB rays…and it accumulates in the body faster than we are able to rid of it. Sunlight has been shown to break down this chemical into harmful byproducts. It then becomes toxic and disrupts estrogen, androgen and progesterone levels. In addition to direct health concerns following Homosalate exposure, the chemical has been shown to potentially enhance the absorption of pesticides in the body.

‼️ These are just the ACTIVE ingredients in this specific Coola product‼️The inactive ingredient to consider as potentially harmful is “Flavor.” This is just another term for our fave word, Fragrance. I email companies that claim to be non toxic quite often and ask about what their Fragrance is made up of. Every once in a blue moon they disclose the ingredients, and they are pure essential oils! But more often then not they give me the runaround and just tell me it’s a “proprietary blend,” meaning it can be made up of over 3,000 chemicals of which we have no knowledge of.

So what should you look for in a sunscreen?

🌿I recommend using a mineral sunscreen, which means the active ingredients are minerals as opposed to chemicals like the ones listed above. They are also referred to as “physical sunscreens” because they provide a physical barrier between the sun and your skin. There are 2 popular types of mineral active ingredients: Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.

🌱 Zinc Oxide: Zinc is a natural ingredient, however Zinc Oxide is not naturally-occurring. To get Zinc Oxide, the zinc must be chemically heated and combined with oxygen molecules. The two elements are vaporized, condensed, and formed into a powder that is fine, white, crystallized and sits on top of the skin providing a protective layer…thus not penetrating the skin. A lot of people shy away from Zinc Oxide based sunscreens because of the white film it leaves, but there have been recent developments in particle breakdown, resulting in Nano Zinc Oxide. The benefit to this is that it does not leave a white film…BUT that is because the Zinc Oxide is now able to penetrate into the skin. If you want to learn more about Nanoparticles, I have a whole entire post dedicated to them! Let me know and I will tag you in it! But basically, the jury is still out on whether Nano Zinc Oxide is safe or not. For that reason I recommend looking for Non-nano Zinc Oxide on the label when choosing a sunscreen. There are also many benefits to selecting Non-nano Zinc Oxide:
▪️ helps with inflammation
▪️provides broad-spectrum sun protection
▪️provides protection from skin cancer
▪️improves wound healing and fights bacterial infections
▪️aids in the recovery of burns/damaged tissues
▪️can help treat acne
▪️keeps moisture locked in to dry skin
▪️ reduces dandriff
▪️ treats warts
▪️ can help with rosacea
▪️ can help with melasma
▪️slows aging
▪️ helps with collagen formation

🌱Titanium Dioxide: This is the other option if you’re searching for a mineral Active Ingredient. Titanium Dioxide is UV filtering ingredient that is made out of a fine, white, powder that is derived from Titanium. It is important to not that Titanium Dioxide is ONLY safe in liquid form…if inhaled in powder form it is possibly carcinogenic. One of the great things about Titanium Dioxide is there is very low risks of skin sensitivities. It is great for everyday use because it’s effective at preventing short wave UVA and UVB rays.

😳 I know this is overwhelming info, and the sunscreen aisles in places like Target and CVS don’t make it any easier. So, I am going to list a few options for y’all to consider when making your selection! It’s also important to note that just because this particular Coola spray didn’t fit the bill, there can be other products within that line that do! The ingredients vary so if you have your heart set on this brand, sit tight! In addition to ALLLLL of this, you ultimately have to make the decision based on what’s right for you and your family! We all have different personal preferences when it comes to ingredients and products, and I fully respect that! I am just here to present the facts and aid y’all in the process 💁🏻‍♀️

Hi!

Hi!

✨ For those of y’all that are new here I thought I’d take a moment to tell a little bit about myself and how Glam & Green started!✨

I’m Lauren, a wife/mom living in Houston, TX, and I wanna start off by saying THANK YOU for being a part of this community! We are at ALL different stages in our toxin free journeys, so you can rest assured that you belong here 🤗

I began this page when I discovered a toxin free cosmetic brand called Crunchi. You’ll hear me mention this brand often as I am an advocate for Crunchi and completely obsessed with their products. I discuss everything from how to detect if a product has safe ingredients, to topics related to your health and well-being 🌱

You may be wondering how I stumbled upon Crunchi? 💭

It all really started about 5 years ago when my Aunt was diagnosed with cancer. Everyone knows someone (or let’s face it…multiple someone’s) that has this ugly disease. 😔

That same year my husband and I were moved to California for his job. I found a part time position in a clean beauty shop…and I honestly had no idea what “clean beauty” even was at the time 😂 I LOVED working in that store! Trying all the makeup, getting to know the customers, learning why these beauty products were so different than the rest….💄

Eventually I started switching my beauty routine over to what I assumed to be safer brands. I didn’t really know what made them safer and why the ingredients in those brands were different than my beloved MAC foundation!

Then the next event happened…we found out we were expecting. And THAT’S when I started actually researching the individual ingredients in the cosmetic and personal care products I was using everyday. I’m gonna try and make a long story short here and connect all the dots for y’all:

👉🏼 What I found was that MANY ingredients in the various products we use EVERYDAY were causing illnesses and reproductive issues in the population…awful cancer included.

👉🏼 As I looked further, I found out even many of the brands I thought were toxin free were actually Greenwashed (basically misleading marketing). I began searching high and low and trying out new products, and it took me a couple years but I finally stumbled upon Crunchi.

I wish I could say the rest is history, but shortly after finding Crunchi and falling in love with their products…I had a miscarriage. Instead of sitting around feeling sorry for myself and allowing myself to dwell on it, I decided to become an advocate. Not only for Crunchi, but for safe beauty in general! Crunchi gave me the platform and training that I needed to get started, and from there this page kind of just blossomed! 🌸

My aunt passed away this January, and every day since has been a struggle for my family and I. But every time I log onto Facebook and look at this little corner of the internet, I find a little bit of peace and it gives me hope ☺️

I am so happy to have you all here! I would love to hear all about where you are at in your toxin free journey in the comments! 💕

Toxin Free Diapers

Toxin Free Diapers

👶🏼 Have you ever given much thought to what diapers are made up of? 👶🏼

Ummmm…this is something that didn’t even occur to me when we first had Juliette. Our main goals were:
1️⃣ No leaks/explosions lol
2️⃣ Cheap!
3️⃣ Quick delivery if ordering online

What I never took into consideration was the make up of the typical diaper. Most popular brands contain the following:

❌ Dioxins: these come from bleaching the cotton with chlorine. There have been studies showing that dioxins can cause impairments to the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system as well as reproductive functions. They may cause skin reactions as well as alter the function of the liver. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), classify dioxins as being among the most toxic chemicals known to science and they list them as highly carcinogenic chemicals.

❌ Sodium Polyacrylate: this is an absorbent filler in many brands of diapers. You may have even SEEN it in your little ones diaper before…it looks like little gel-like crystals that stick to the skin (i have most DEFINITELY seen this in Juliette’s dipes if I leave them on her too long…so scary!). These little gel crystals can cause skin irritation, leading to diaper rash and even respiratory problems. Here’s a NOT so fun fact about this little doozy of a chemical: it was removed from tampons due to toxic shock syndrome

❌ Tributyl-tin (TBT): this is classified as toxic to aquatic life and causes endocrine disruption in aquatic life. This chemical is also not biodegradable and it remains in our food chain, and there have been studies linking it to obesity.

There are so many other crazy chemicals that can be found in diapers, I will link a few of my resources below so that if your interested you can look through everything:

🦒 I recently stumbled upon this company that not only makes SAFE diapers for your little one, but you can get a monthly subscription delivered to your door! 🦒

It’s called Dyper, and they make biodegradable bamboo diapers that ship directly to your door! 📦

They are a little pricey in my personal opinion, but every one has different things they would prefer to invest in and I cannot think of a better investment than a sweet little babes health!

I also checked out their other products, they have a diaper cream, wipes, a diaper pail with biodegradable bags, and a super site diaper bag 💁🏻‍♀️

300x300 Diapers for $64/month
Dyper has created the safest diaper for the most precious of customers. Our diapers use the TCF fluff pulp and are free of harmful chemicals and are not printed to avoid the use of inks and alcohol.

DIY Under Arm Detox

DIY Under Arm Detox

❓Why do an armpit detox ❓

Wellllllll, what deodorant actually does is mask the smell of bacteria that comes from sweating. If you are still using an antiperspirant, the purpose of that is to reduce actual sweating. The armpits are the entry and exit point of the body, so things can get pretty smelly around there. 👃🏻

Did you know your armpits contain one of the highest concentrations of lymph nodes in the body! 💭 Armpit detoxes are designed to get rid of those nasty bacteria’s that have built up on your skin, and in the long run can eventually help reduce the capacity of your sweat glands and the amount of odor they produce.

There are many variables that play into why we smell “off” sometimes, for example: stress, poor diet, or having one too many glasses of wine once in a while! (🙋🏻‍♀️)

🌿If you’ve already switched over to a toxin free deodorant, then the detox process has already begun! 🌿

That’s the good news! The bad news is that your body may take time to adjust to your new deodorant…resulting in funky smells 😣

I will confess to you all that I am an armpit-detox-newbie 🤫 I have been meaning to do one for quite some time now, sooooo, I’ll be posting a video shortly of my first armpit detox for your viewing pleasure 💁🏻‍♀️

It should be super fun, and you will get to see my pits! #embarrassing But ya know, anything for the sake of the blog!

DIY armpit detox’s are actually super simple! You only need a few items:

✅ 1 TBSP Bentonite Clay

✅ 1 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar

✅ 1-2 TBSP filtered water

Mix all of the ingredients with a NON METAL utensil until a paste forms.

⏰ If you’re a first timer (like me!), it’s suggested you only leave the mixture on for 5 minutes. The goal is to work your way up to 20 minutes after a few days. If you notice any skin irritations, do not continue. Your skin may become slightly red, but it should not be painful or anything.

Excess sweating is to be expected, and I know it’s hard but it’s best to avoid wearing deodorant throughout the detox process (which could take up to a few days 😬)

Crunchi Primer and Foundation

Crunchi Primer and Foundation

✈️ We’ve been traveling all week, and although we’ve been on the go 24/7 my skin has stayed nice and smooth. ✈️

I was a bit worried because the air quality is not the best in NYC and my skin tends to dry out easily, but theres been one product that has gotten me by and it’s kinda surprising:  Crunchi Smart Primer 🌿

I slathered some of this baby all over my face right before our flight last week, and have been applying it every morning after my cleansing/moisturizing/sunscreen routine (whether I put makeup on or not that day). It’s been locking in moisture and keeping my skin hydrated and baby soft! Even through this crazy weather! (One day it was warm, the next it nearly snowed ⛄️)

I’ve always been a fan of this primer. It goes on cool and just feels SO GOOD on your skin! It also hydrates, smooths and preps your face for perfect makeup application ✨

It’s rich in jojoba, avocado and rosehip oils, and packed with antioxidants!

It’s also balanced enough to use whether you have dry and oily skin. On most days I like to apply where I have larger pores and fine lines/wrinkles…but this week I’ve been practically bathing in it 😂

The Best Toxin Free Dry Shampoo

The Best Toxin Free Dry Shampoo

16DDA2CF-2EFC-4A31-BFB0-5797BBC04DE7For those of you who own Crunchi’s Flawless Finishing Powder or if you’re just looking for a toxin free dry shampoo…I’ve discovered an awesommmmme hack!

I get so many questions about my fave dry shampoo, and I usually recommend the Innersense foaming one….but this beats that HANDS DOWN.

How it’s done:

1️⃣ Tap a bit of the of Crunchi’s #nofilter powder into the cap
2️⃣ Swirl a tiny amount onto a clean fluffy brush
3️⃣ Apply to the roots of your hair

That is IT! I am still totally shocked at how well this worked. Another thing to not is that you only need a teeny tiny amount to “shampoo” your whole head. I purchased this back and mid August and I still have half a container left.

* please excuse my dirty hair in this photo, which shows my hair 5 (gasp 😱, yes 5 lol) days dirty. The next picture is right after I applied the powder. The greasiness was totally gone and there was no icky residue feeling left behind! Just dry fluffiness!

✨ Product Review ✨

✨ Product Review ✨

I’ve recently run out of some products and I thought I’d do a quick review of each one for y’all and let you know what I liked and what I didn’t like 💁🏻‍♀️

🛁 First up is my Innersense Color Awakening Hairbath Shampoo:
Loved this stuff! It’s super hydrating and doesn’t leave my hair greasy at all. The other awesome thing I loved about this was I could go 4-6 days between washes! I purchased this product in September and I still have about 2 or 3 washes left! I would definitely repurchase, but I am going to try a different brand next and see how I like it in comparison. I’ll keep y’all posted on that 😉

🌙 Crunchi Nightlight and Daylight:
Love both of these, I’ve already replenished them for a third time. They are definitely a little but if a splurge, but so worth it. I’m a huge Crunchi fan but I’m honestly surprised that my skin is still loving them! In the past when I would find a moisturizer I liked it would stop working about 6 months in. I’m past the 6 month mark with these babies and they are still going strong…definitely keepers!

🌊 Fitglow Beauty Sea Toning Mist:
I’m obsessed with this, and I will repurchase eventually. It’s another splurge item so maybe not right away, but definitely before the hot summer months hit! It’s not only a wonderful toner, is great for setting makeup or to just get a quick pick me up after a workout 🏃‍♀️

🧴 100% Pure Body Butter:
I liked this body butter a lot, however I will not be repurchasing it because they use Japanese Honeysuckle as a preservative. Sounds innocent, but this ingredient is something I personally try and steer clear of because it naturally contains para-hydroxy benzoic acid (PHBA), which might behave in a very similar way to synthetic parabens (which themselves may mimic estrogen and act as potential hormone/endocrine system disruptors). There are better options out there, so for that reason this little dude won’t be getting a refill.

💦 Last but not least is my Andalou Naturals Shower Gel. This stuff is great! I highly recommend giving it a try if you’re looking to do an easy swap. The consistency is a little more watery than your typical body wash but I think that’s because of all the natural ingredients in it. I would say it lathers well and smells great without having that icky scary word “fragrance” being on the label. My fave thing about this is the price, and that you can find it in Marshall’s, TJMAXX, and Homegoods OR your local grocery stores. I’ll be repurchasing in the future but for now I’m going to try something new out and report back to y’all 📝
